How to Scrap a Car in Ladner: Your Preparation Checklist
Getting ready means organizing your belongings, sale documents and access — not repairing a vehicle for a test drive. Use this five-step checklist before, during and after pickup.
Your five-step preparation checklist
Call Jay with the vehicle and access details
Call 604-889-4470 with the year, make, model, condition and completeness. Mention significant missing parts or wheels, the exact pickup location, whether the vehicle rolls and any access restrictions. Jay personally serves Ladner, Tsawwassen and the listed neighbourhoods. Explain what you know without guessing at repairs or trying to drive an unsafe car to demonstrate it.
Confirm the offer, towing terms and time
Agree the offer and ask whether standard towing is free for your eligible complete vehicle purchase. Difficult recovery may involve assessment and a separate cost. Confirm an available pickup time, who will attend and what ownership paperwork and authorization are needed. Tell Jay about changes to the vehicle before pickup, especially significant parts you plan to remove.
Before: organize belongings, plates and access
Empty the storage spaces, put registration or proof of ownership and valid authorization together and find any keys. Remove plates where safe; Jay carries tools and can help with seized, rusted or stripped screws without guaranteeing success for every bolt. Clear movable obstacles and advise him of years of parking, blocked access or overgrown blackberry bushes. Do not attempt a risky recovery yourself.
During: confirm the sale before loading
Jay checks the vehicle, legal seller, documents and loading access. Payment happens before the vehicle is loaded. He may use a winch if safe and feasible and secures the vehicle on an insured tow truck for transport. An unsafe scrap car is never driven along public roads. Stay clear of the loading area rather than trying to steer, push or pull without an agreed safe approach.
After: keep records and get broker advice
Keep the plates and sale paperwork in a place you can find them. Speak with an ICBC Autoplan broker about cancellation or transfer of insurance and any registration obligations that apply. Do not assume that towing a car away automatically updates coverage or registration. Ask the broker for guidance specific to your situation instead of treating a general pickup checklist as legal advice.
Before / during / after pickup
Before pickup
Check the glovebox, trunk, door pockets, console and under seats. Remove personal belongings, passes and garage door openers, and discuss aftermarket items you want to keep before removing anything significant. Put registration or proof of ownership, authorization and available keys together. Remove plates where safe, but do not force rusted or stripped screws; Jay carries tools and can help without promising success for every bolt. Clear movable obstacles and tell him about blocked access, soft ground or overgrowth.
During pickup
Be ready to confirm the vehicle and the legal seller with the proper documents. A helper can hand over keys or provide access, but the sale still needs the owner’s authority. Jay checks the loading route and pays the agreed amount before loading. A winch is used only if safe and feasible, and the vehicle is secured on an insured tow truck. Stay away from the working area; an unsafe scrap vehicle is never driven along public roads.
After pickup
Keep plates and the sale paperwork rather than leaving them in the vehicle. Speak with an ICBC Autoplan broker about insurance cancellation or transfer and any registration obligations relevant to your circumstances. Collection is not confirmation that those matters have already been dealt with. Expired road insurance is okay for tow-truck transport, but questions about your coverage or records still belong with the broker.
Remove what's yours
- Personal belongings — check the glovebox, trunk, door pockets and under the seats.
- Garage door openers, toll transponders and parking passes.
- Your licence plates — remove them if possible and safe, and keep any removed plates with your documents. Ask Jay for help with stubborn screws rather than risking injury.
- Anything aftermarket you want to keep, discussed with us before pickup if it affects completeness.
Have the paperwork ready
You'll need to show you own the vehicle or have the owner's authority to sell it. If someone else will be meeting the truck to hand over keys and provide access, sort out the authorization and paperwork in advance — a sale can't be completed without it. When you're not sure what applies to your situation, ask on the call; for anything beyond the basics, your insurer or ICBC can advise.
Plates and insurance after the sale
Once the vehicle is gone, contact your insurer about cancelling or transferring coverage. Expired insurance before the sale is no problem — the vehicle travels on an insured tow truck rather than being driven, so it never needs to be road-legal for the trip.
Make access easy
- Move bins, bikes and other vehicles out of the path.
- Find the keys if you can — missing keys aren't necessarily a problem, but say so upfront.
- Mention flat tires, seized wheels, tight gates or soft ground when booking.
